In February 1895, the Lumière brothers patented a machine that was a camera, a projector and a printer in one. This desk mat gives it the blueprint treatment.

The artwork is drawn like an archival technical sheet, in cream linework on deep navy with a faint grid. The title block at the upper left reads “The Lumière Cinématographe, 1895” with the line “The Camera That Brought Motion to Life,” above a portrait captioned Auguste & Louis Lumière. The center is an engraved-style illustration of the wooden box camera on a tripod, with its crank, lens, nameplate and the film magazine on top. Callouts name the parts, and dimension lines run around it.

At the upper right, a diagram titled “Internal Mechanism (Film Transport)” labels the supply reel, the pull-down claw, the frame gate and the take-up reel. Front and side views sit below it, along with a strip of 35 mm film labeled “≈16 frames per second.”

The mat is 15.5" × 31.5" (39.4 × 80 cm), made from 3 mm neoprene with an anti-slip backing. It is spot clean only and air dry only. If film history is your thing, here’s more for film history fans.

It suits filmmakers, film historians, cinematographers, film students, and anyone curious about how movies began.
